App Protection Policies (APP), also known as Mobile Application Management (MAM) policies, are designed to protect organizational data within managed applications. These policies include specific data protection settings that can control how data is shared between apps. To prevent data leakage, an administrator can configure an APP to restrict cut, copy, and paste actions, allowing data transfer only between other policy-managed applications while blocking it for unmanaged personal apps. This directly addresses the requirement to secure data within Microsoft Excel on iOS devices.

B. an app configuration policy: App configuration policies are used to supply settings for an app when it runs, such as a browser homepage or a user's email address, not to control data transfer between applications.
C. an iOS app provisioning profile: This is a file required to install custom line-of-business (LOB) iOS apps onto devices. It has no role in managing data protection or user actions within an app.
D. policies for Microsoft Office apps: This is too general. While the policy will target Office apps, the specific policy type in Microsoft Intune used to control data transfer is an App Protection Policy.

1. Microsoft Learn. "What are app protection policies?" Microsoft Intune documentation. This document states, "App protection policies (APP) are rules that ensure an organization's data remains safe or contained in a managed app... APP data protection controls include restricting cut, copy, paste, and save-as."

2. Microsoft Learn. "iOS/iPadOS app protection policy settings in Microsoft Intune." Microsoft Intune documentation. Under the "Data protection" section, the setting Restrict cut, copy, and paste between other apps is detailed. This setting allows an administrator to select options like "Blocked" to prevent cut, copy, and paste actions between the policy-managed app and any other app.

3. Microsoft Learn. "App configuration policies for Microsoft Intune." Microsoft Intune documentation. This source clarifies that App Configuration Policies "can help you eliminate app setup problems by letting you assign configuration settings to a policy that is assigned to end-users before they run the app." This confirms their purpose is configuration, not data transfer control.
