TL;DR: HashiCorp is renaming its lab-based Terraform exam. What used to be called Terraform Authoring and Operations Professional becomes Terraform Authoring and Operations Advanced, effective Fall 2026. Anyone who has passed the lab-based Terraform or Vault Professional exam becomes a “HashiCorp Certified: Advanced” holder, with badges and certificates updated automatically in Credly and the HashiCorp Certifications account. The exam content and lab format do not change. The confusing part is that HashiCorp’s certification pages also list a different, new exam called Terraform Infrastructure Engineer Professional (002), a 90-minute multiple-choice exam that HashiCorp’s page says launches in October 2026 at IBM TechXchange in Atlanta. So the word “Professional” is about to mean a different exam than it did last year. HashiCorp has not published a price or question count for the new Professional exam, and its own pages disagree on how many credential levels exist. This guide lays out each exam, what the rename does and does not change, and how renewal works.
If you searched for “Terraform Professional” and found conflicting answers, that is why. The map below sorts old names from new ones.
Quick Facts
| Item | What we found |
| Rename | Lab-based Terraform Professional becomes Terraform Authoring and Operations Advanced |
| Vault equivalent | Lab-based Vault Professional becomes Vault Operations Advanced |
| Effective | Fall 2026 |
| Who becomes “Advanced” | Everyone who passed a lab-based Terraform or Vault Professional exam, past and future |
| Badge changes | Updated automatically in Credly and HashiCorp Certifications. Existing badge links keep working |
| What does not change | Exam content and lab-based format |
| New exam | Terraform Infrastructure Engineer Professional (002): multiple choice, online proctored, 90 minutes, tests Terraform 1.15 |
| New exam launch | October 2026, per HashiCorp’s page, at IBM TechXchange 2026 in Atlanta |
| HashiConf at IBM TechXchange | Atlanta, October 26 to 29, 2026, per HashiCorp’s conference page |
| Not published | Price and question count for the new Professional exam, exact rename date |
HashiCorp’s own pages are the source for every fact above. Where a number comes from a third party, this guide marks it “reported”. We found no reported figures that we needed, so there are none in this post.
The Name Map: Old and New
Most explainers repeat the announcement. This table maps every name you are likely to meet, because the same word now appears in two places.
| Name | What it is | Format | Status |
| Terraform Associate (004) | Entry level, tests Terraform 1.12 | Multiple choice, online proctored, 1 hour | Current. US$70.50 plus taxes and fees, free retake not included |
| Terraform Authoring and Operations Professional | The previous name of the lab-based exam | Lab-based | Renamed to Advanced in Fall 2026 |
| Terraform Authoring and Operations Advanced | The same lab-based exam under its new name | Lab-based, 4 hours with a 15-minute break, tests Terraform 1.6 | US$295 plus taxes and fees, free retake included |
| Terraform Infrastructure Engineer Professional (002) | A new, different exam | Multiple choice, online proctored, 90 minutes, tests Terraform 1.15 | Launching October 2026. Price “coming soon” |
The row to notice is the second and fourth. “Professional” used to mean the hands-on lab. After this change, the lab is “Advanced” and “Professional” belongs to a multiple-choice exam. If a study site, a job posting or a colleague says “Terraform Professional”, ask which one they mean.
The conflict we found
HashiCorp’s announcement says HashiCorp Certifications will have two credential levels, Associate and Advanced. But the certification pages we read list three levels for Terraform: Associate, Professional and Advanced. We could not find a HashiCorp statement that reconciles the two. The most likely reading is that the announcement describes the lab-based track only and the new multiple-choice Professional exam sits alongside it, but that is our inference, not a HashiCorp statement.
What the Rename Changes and What It Does Not
| Question | Answer from HashiCorp |
| Do I have to retake anything? | No. Existing Professional holders are updated to Advanced automatically |
| Does my badge link break? | No. Existing badge links and shares continue to work |
| Does the exam content change? | No. Content and format stay the same |
| Does the Associate change? | The announcement does not mention it |
| Are the Associate or old Professional exams retired? | The announcement does not say so |
| When exactly does it happen? | “Fall 2026”. No exact date |
| Is the new name already visible? | Yes. HashiCorp’s certification pages already use “Advanced” for the lab exam, while the announcement gives the effective date as Fall 2026 |
What it means on a resume or profile
If you hold the lab-based credential, it will appear as “HashiCorp Certified: Advanced”. Until then, a safe way to write it is the new name with the old name in brackets, so a recruiter searching either term finds you. That wording is our suggestion, not a HashiCorp rule.
Vault gets the same treatment
The lab-based Vault Professional exam is renamed Vault Operations Advanced under the same announcement. One detail worth knowing: HashiCorp’s certifications page calls it “Vault Operations Advanced” in the body but “Vault Authoring and Operations Advanced” in the navigation menu, so the official name may still be settling. If you study for Vault, our Vault Associate exam page covers the entry-level exam.
The Lab-Based Advanced Exam in Detail
Everything below is from HashiCorp’s page for the exam.
| Detail | Terraform Authoring and Operations Advanced |
| Format | Online proctored. Lab-based and multiple choice |
| Duration | 4 hours, including a 15-minute break |
| Price | US$295 plus taxes and fees, free retake included |
| Language | English. US QWERTY keyboard only |
| Validity | 2 years |
| Terraform version tested | 1.6 |
| Domains | Resource lifecycle, dynamic configuration, collaborative workflows, modules, providers, HCP Terraform |
| Prerequisites | Terraform Associate strongly recommended, or equivalent experience. Linux skills, cloud credentials, familiarity with YAML, JSON, HCL and CSV, networking basics |
Two things stand out. The exam tests Terraform 1.6, which is older than the Associate’s 1.12 and the new Professional’s 1.15. HashiCorp has not said whether the lab will be refreshed. And the price includes a free retake, which the Associate does not.
For readers deciding whether to go straight to the lab, our existing comparison of the Terraform Associate and the Professional-named lab exam covers the difficulty gap. That post uses the old name, and everything it says about the lab exam now applies to the exam called Advanced.
The New Professional Exam
HashiCorp’s page for Terraform Infrastructure Engineer Professional (002) says:
| Detail | What the page says |
| Format | Multiple choice, online proctored |
| Duration | 90 minutes |
| Language | English |
| Price | “Coming soon” |
| Launch | October 2026, at IBM TechXchange 2026 in Atlanta, with online registration opening later |
| Terraform version tested | 1.15 |
| Validity | 2 years |
| Prerequisites | Basic terminal skills, understanding of on-premises and cloud architecture, production Terraform experience. Associate strongly recommended, or equivalent experience |
The page does not give a question count or a passing score.
The countdown to HashiConf
HashiCorp’s conference page puts HashiConf at IBM TechXchange 2026 in Atlanta from October 26 to 29. Today is October 14, so that is 12 days away.
| Date | Days from today | What to watch |
| October 14, 2026 | 0 | Exam page says “coming soon” for price |
| October 26, 2026 | 12 | HashiConf begins |
| October 29, 2026 | 15 | HashiConf ends. The page says the new exam launches in October, with online registration opening later |
| October 31, 2026 | 17 | End of the launch month named on the page |
HashiCorp’s certifications page also says that buying a HashiConf at TechXchange ticket includes two free exams. The conference page we read did not mention that offer, so confirm it before you plan around it.
How Renewal Works
Both of the exams above are valid for two years. HashiCorp’s pages describe a renewal system that connects them.
| If you hold | You can extend it by passing | Notes |
| Terraform Associate (004), unexpired | The new Professional, or the AWS or Azure version of the Advanced exam | Extends the Associate’s expiration date and earns a new badge |
| Terraform Associate (002 or 003), unexpired | The Professional or the Advanced exam | Same, per the Associate page |
| Terraform Associate, expired | The current Associate exam | Higher-level exams are not listed as a route for expired Associates |
| Advanced, unexpired | The Advanced exam again, starting 6 months before expiration | Extends your current credentials |
| Advanced, expired | The Advanced exam, at any time | Issues new credentials with a new expiration date |
| Professional, unexpired | The Professional exam starting 6 months before expiration, or the AWS or Azure Advanced exam | The Advanced route also earns a new advanced-level badge |
The six-month window on the Advanced exam is a good planning date. If your credential expires on a given day, the window opens six months earlier. For example, an Advanced credential expiring on October 14, 2027 would open its renewal window on April 14, 2027.
What the Associate page does not say
HashiCorp’s Associate page lists higher-level exams as a way to extend an unexpired Associate. It does not state a six-month window for the Associate itself, and it does not describe a plain retake of an unexpired Associate. If you hold an Associate close to expiry, confirm the route on HashiCorp’s page before you pay for a higher-level exam.
A rough cost view
| Exam | Price | Source |
| Terraform Associate (004) | US$70.50 plus taxes and fees | HashiCorp |
| Terraform Authoring and Operations Advanced | US$295 plus taxes and fees, free retake included | HashiCorp |
| Terraform Infrastructure Engineer Professional (002) | Not published | HashiCorp says “coming soon” |
We have not computed a cost per year of validity for the new Professional, because its price is not out. When it is, the arithmetic is a simple division of price by two years of validity.
Which Exam Should You Aim For?
| Your situation | Suggested path |
| New to Terraform | Associate (004). Practice the objectives first, then book |
| Using Terraform in production, want a hands-on credential | Advanced, the renamed lab exam |
| Using Terraform in production, prefer a multiple-choice format | Wait for the new Professional exam details |
| Hold the lab exam under its old name | Nothing to do. The rename updates your credential automatically |
| Hold an Associate and want to extend it | Check the table above, then confirm on HashiCorp’s page |
For the entry-level exam, see our Terraform Associate (004) exam page and the free practice questions. If you studied for the earlier version, the Terraform Associate (003) exam page covers it. You can browse the full HashiCorp vendor page for related exams.
Six-Step Check Before You Book Any HashiCorp Exam
- Open the HashiCorp page for the exact exam and copy its full name. “Professional” and “Advanced” now point to different exams.
- Note the format. The Associate and the new Professional are multiple choice. The Advanced exam is a four-hour lab.
- Note the Terraform version the exam tests: 1.12, 1.6 or 1.15. Practice in that version.
- Read the price line on the day you book. The new Professional price is not published yet, and prices can change.
- Check your own credential in Credly or your HashiCorp Certifications account for its expiration date.
- If you plan to renew with a higher-level exam, confirm the route on the Associate page, because it does not describe every case.
These six steps take about ten minutes and prevent two common wasted purchases: the wrong exam and an exam you didn’t need.
Who Should Care Most
| Reader | Why it matters | First move |
| Holder of the lab-based credential | The title on your profile is about to change | Do nothing. Update your resume wording when the change appears |
| Associate holder near expiry | A higher-level exam can extend it | Compare the Advanced price with a plain Associate retake before choosing |
| Hiring manager | Candidates may show “Professional” or “Advanced” for the same lab exam | Ask which exam the candidate passed, not just the title |
| Engineer planning a first Terraform credential | The ladder has changed | Start with the Associate and decide on the next rung after the new Professional details are out |
Common Mistakes
- Assuming “Professional” still means the lab. After the rename, the lab is “Advanced”. Check which exam a source means.
- Retaking something you do not need to retake. If you hold the lab credential, the rename updates it automatically.
- Planning around an exact date. HashiCorp says “Fall 2026” and nothing more specific. Do not schedule around a guess.
- Booking the new Professional before details are out. The price and question count are not published. Wait for the registration page.
- Treating the Terraform version as a detail. The Advanced exam tests 1.6, the Associate tests 1.12 and the new Professional tests 1.15. Practice in the version the exam uses.
- Counting on the free exams offer. The offer appears on the certifications page but not on the conference page we read. Confirm before you buy a ticket for that reason.
What We Don’t Know Yet
- The exact rename date. HashiCorp says Fall 2026.
- The price and question count of the new Professional exam. The page says “coming soon”.
- Whether the lab exam will be refreshed. It tests Terraform 1.6 today.
- How many credential levels exist. The announcement says two, the certification pages show three.
- Whether the Associate or older exams are retired. The announcement does not say.
- The passing score for the new Professional exam. Not on the page.
- The Vault exam’s official name. HashiCorp’s pages use two versions.
- Salary effects. We did not find a source that isolates pay for credential holders, so we left salary figures out of this guide.
We will update this guide when HashiCorp publishes the Professional exam’s registration page.
