TL;DR: CARE (Certification Advancement & Recertification Experience) is CNCF’s renewal system, effective January 1, 2026. The idea is simple: when you pass or recertify a higher-level Kubernetes exam, the related foundational certifications you already hold are renewed automatically. Passing or recertifying CKA or CKAD renews KCNA. Passing or recertifying CKS renews KCSA, and since June 18, 2026, it also renews CKA, which in turn cascades to KCNA. The Linux Foundation’s CARE page adds a fourth path: passing or recertifying LFCS renews LFCA from August 1, 2026. CARE only renews certifications you have already earned; it works even if the foundational certification has expired, and it is not retroactive. If you hold all five Kubestronaut certifications, our arithmetic says two exams (CKAD and CKS) can keep all five current, instead of five. The free time and money are real, but several details are not published, including exact extension lengths and fees, and this guide flags each gap.
The practical question is not “what is CARE?” It is “which exam do I take next so that it renews the most?” The renewal stack below answers that.
Quick Facts
| Item | What we found |
| Program name | CARE: Certification Advancement & Recertification Experience |
| Announced | At KubeCon + CloudNativeCon Europe, with CNCF’s blog post of March 23, 2026 |
| Effective | January 1, 2026, with full implementation in June 2026 |
| Core rule | Achieving or renewing a higher-level certification automatically updates related foundational certifications |
| KCNA | Renewed by earning or recertifying CKA or CKAD, on or after January 1, 2026 |
| KCSA | Renewed by earning or recertifying CKS, on or after January 1, 2026 |
| CKA | Renewed by earning or recertifying CKS, on or after June 18, 2026 |
| LFCA | Renewed by earning or recertifying LFCS, on or after August 1, 2026 |
| Biggest cascade | CKS can renew up to three certifications: KCSA, CKA and KCNA |
| Eligibility | You must have previously earned the foundational certification. It can be current or expired |
| Retroactive? | No. A CKS passed before June 18, 2026 does not renew CKA |
| Processing time | A few business days. Updated dates appear in your Training Portal profile and Credly badges update |
| Validity of the certifications | Reported as 2 years for KCNA, KCSA, CKA, CKAD and CKS. CNCF’s page states 2 years for CKS |
| Exam fees | Reported as US$ 250 for KCNA and KCSA, and US$ 445 for CKA, CKAD and CKS |
CNCF’s and the Linux Foundation’s pages are the source for the rules. The validity periods for most certifications and all of the fees come from a third-party article (KodeKloud, updated July 16, 2026), because the CNCF pages we read gave only the CKS validity. Confirm fees and dates on the official pages before you book.
The Renewal Stack: Which Exam Renews What
Most explainers describe the program in prose. This one lays it out as a stack, because the useful question is which single exam gives you the most coverage.
| If you take or recertify | It renews | Starts | Cascade |
| CKS | KCSA, CKA | KCSA from January 1, 2026. CKA from June 18, 2026 | CKA’s renewal then carries to KCNA, so CKS can cover three certifications |
| CKA | KCNA | January 1, 2026 | None further |
| CKAD | KCNA | January 1, 2026 | None further |
| LFCS | LFCA | August 1, 2026 | None further |
| KCNA, KCSA, LFCA | Nothing | n/a | Foundational exams renew nothing else |
The rule that decides most cases
CKA is the most valuable exam in the stack, because one pass covers three certifications. CKAD is a peer of CKA and renews only KCNA. That matters for Kubestronaut candidates, as the next section shows.
What “cascade” means in practice
The Linux Foundation’s July 28, 2026 article says earning or renewing CKS “automatically triggers a cascading renewal” of CKA, KCSA and KCNA. In plain terms, one exam updates three expiration dates, and each extended certification is set to active, even if it had expired, with an expiration date matched to the higher-level certification.
What CARE Does Not Do
CARE has limits that a headline can hide.
| Limit | What the official page says |
| It does not grant a certification you never held | Passing a higher-level exam does not give you a foundational certification you never earned |
| It is not retroactive | Renewals apply only to qualifying exams taken on or after the stated dates. A CKS passed before June 18, 2026 does not renew CKA |
| It does not renew upward | Foundational exams renew nothing. Only the higher exam renews the lower one |
| It does not cover every pair | CKAD does not renew CKA or CKS, and CKA does not renew CKAD or CKS (the pages describe only the pairs above) |
| It may need manual processing | If your qualifying certifications sit under different Linux Foundation accounts, you must contact support to have them linked |
Kubestronaut and Golden Kubestronaut: What CARE Means for You
A Kubestronaut holds all five Kubernetes certifications in the track: KCNA, KCSA, CKA, CKAD and CKS (the Linux Foundation describes Kubestronauts as holders of all five). CNCF reports more than 3,500 Kubestronauts, and more than 370 Golden Kubestronauts, who maintain every certification in the track. We could not find CARE-specific rules for Kubestronaut or Golden Kubestronaut status on the pages we read, so confirm there before you plan around them.
The maintenance math
Our arithmetic, using the reported fees and the renewal paths above.
| Approach | Exams needed to keep all five current | Reported cost |
| Recertify each one separately | KCNA, KCSA, CKA, CKAD, CKS | 250 + 250 + 445 + 445 + 445 = US$1,835 |
| Use the CARE cascade | CKAD and CKS | 445 + 445 = US$890 |
| Savings | Three fewer exams | US$945 |
How the cascade covers each certification: CKS renews KCSA, CKA and, through CKA, KCNA. CKAD renews KCNA, but CKAD itself is not renewed by anything else, so you take it directly. That leaves two exams.
Two cautions. First, the cost row assumes that “recertify” means retaking the exam at the listed price. We did not find a published recertification fee, so the real figure could differ. Second, we did not find whether Golden Kubestronaut status has its own conditions beyond holding current certifications, so this is the cost of keeping the certifications current, not a statement about the title.
The Three Dates That Matter
| Date | What changed |
| January 1, 2026 | CARE became effective. KCNA and KCSA renewal paths began |
| June 18, 2026 | CKS began renewing CKA. Announced June 17, 2026 by CNCF’s training and certification lead |
| August 1, 2026 | LFCS began renewing LFCA (per the Linux Foundation’s CARE page) |
The March 2026 announcement said that anyone earning or recertifying a qualifying certification between January 1, 2026 and full implementation would be grandfathered into the updated structure, provided they previously earned the foundational certification. So the program reaches back to January 1 for KCNA and KCSA, but not before June 18 for CKA.
An example timeline
Our illustration, not a real case. A candidate earned CKA in September 2024 and KCNA in August 2024. Under the reported two-year validity, both would have expired in 2026. If she passes CKS on or after June 18, 2026, CKA is reinstated or extended to match her new CKS expiry, and KCNA follows. If she passed CKS on June 10, 2026, nothing renews, because the exam was before the start date.
Which Exam Should You Take Next?
| Your situation | Best next exam | Why |
| You hold KCNA only | CKA, then plan toward CKS | CKA renews KCNA, and CKS would later cover three certifications |
| You hold KCNA and CKA | CKS | One pass renews KCSA (if held), CKA and KCNA |
| You hold CKA, CKAD and KCNA, with CKA expiring soon | CKS | Renews CKA and KCNA. CKAD still needs its own renewal |
| You hold CKA that has expired | CKS | CARE can reinstate an expired CKA if you passed CKS on or after June 18, 2026 |
| You passed CKS before June 18, 2026 | Recertify CKS when due, or take CKA again | The pre-June pass does not renew CKA |
| You hold CKAD and want to renew it | CKAD again | Nothing else renews CKAD |
| You hold LFCS and LFCA | Recertify LFCS | Renews LFCA from August 1, 2026 |
| You want to become a Kubestronaut | KCNA, KCSA, CKA, CKAD, CKS | All five, then use CARE to maintain them |
If you are still choosing a starting point, our guide to KCNA vs CKA explains which to take first.
Common Mistakes When Planning a Renewal
| Mistake | Why it costs you | What to do instead |
| Assuming a CKS passed before June 18, 2026 renewed CKA | CARE is not retroactive, so the CKA date did not move | Check the expiry in your Training Portal profile, and plan CKA or CKS accordingly |
| Planning to renew CKAD through CKS | The pages describe no path from CKS to CKAD | Schedule CKAD as its own exam |
| Taking KCNA or KCSA again | Foundational exams renew nothing else, and a higher exam can renew them for you | Let CKA, CKAD or CKS do the work |
| Ignoring a second account | The automatic update cannot link certifications held under different accounts | Contact Linux Foundation Support before your expiry date |
| Waiting until the last week | Processing takes a few business days and dates must be checked afterward | Book at least a month before the earliest expiry |
| Treating the extension length as known | The pages do not state how long an extension lasts | Read the new expiry in your profile after each pass |
Practice and Preparation
Because CKA, CKAD and CKS are performance-based command line exams, practice matters more than reading. Our exam pages can help you find gaps: CKA exam questions, CKAD exam questions, CKS exam questions, KCNA exam questions, KCSA exam questions and LFCS exam questions. Use practice sets to find weak areas and the official curriculum to decide what to study.
Reported exam details
| Exam | Reported fee | Reported duration | Reported passing score | Reported validity |
| KCNA | US$250 | 90 minutes | Not published | 2 years |
| KCSA | US$250 | 90 minutes | Not published | 2 years |
| CKA | US$445 | 2 hours | 66% | 2 years |
| CKAD | US$445 | About 2 hours | 66% | 2 years |
| CKS | US$445 | 2 hours | 67% | 2 years |
These come from a third-party article. CNCF’s certification page confirms only that the CKS is valid for two years, and that CKA, CKAD and CKS are performance-based and run from the command line, while KCNA is online and multiple-choice. The same article says CKA and CKAD certifications earned before April 2024 remain valid for three years.
A renewal planning calendar
| When | What to do |
| 12 months before expiry | List every certification you hold, with its expiry date, in your Training Portal profile |
| 9 months before | Decide which top-level exam covers the most expiring certifications |
| 6 months before | Book the exam and start a practice schedule |
| 3 months before | Take timed practice runs |
| After passing | Wait a few business days, then check that every expected date updated, and that Credly badges match |
| If a date did not update | Contact Linux Foundation Support, especially if you used more than one account |
Practice Scenarios
These are illustrations, not real people.
Scenario 1: A platform engineer with CKA and KCNA, both expiring in November. She plans CKS. One pass renews both (CKA from June 18, 2026). She books it for October and checks her profile a week later.
Scenario 2: A Kubestronaut wondering what to renew. His five certifications expire over the next year. CKS covers three, and CKAD covers KCNA only, so he takes CKAD directly and CKS directly, and checks that each date updates.
Scenario 3: A candidate who passed CKS in May. She assumed it renewed her CKA. It did not, because the exam was before June 18, 2026. She should recertify CKS or retake CKA when the time comes.
Scenario 4: A developer who holds KCNA and CKAD. CKAD renews KCNA, so she only needs to recertify CKAD. KCNA follows.
Scenario 5: A candidate with two Linux Foundation accounts. Her CKA is on one and CKS on the other. The automatic update cannot link them, so she contacts support with details for both accounts.
What We Don’t Know Yet
We would rather list gaps than guess.
- How long each extension lasts. The pages say expirations are set to match the higher-level certification, but do not give durations.
- Whether matching can shorten a date. If the higher certification expires earlier than your existing foundational one, the pages do not say what happens.
- Recertification fees. The fees above are the exam prices reported by a third party. We did not find a separate renewal fee.
- Kubestronaut and Golden Kubestronaut rules under CARE. We found membership numbers but no CARE-specific conditions.
- Whether CKAD renews anything beyond KCNA. The pages describe only the KCNA path for CKAD.
- Whether other exam families will join. CNCF has said it plans to let many of its projects set up their own certification programs. We do not know whether CARE extends to them.
- Validity of certifications we did not see confirmed. CNCF’s page gave two years for CKS only. The rest comes from a third party.
- Processing delays. The page says a few business days, but we do not know typical delays.
