The STDEV function in Microsoft Excel is used to calculate the standard deviation of a sample. Standard deviation is a measure of how widely values are dispersed from the average value (the mean). The function takes a range of cells or a series of numbers as its arguments and returns the estimated standard deviation. While newer functions like STDEV.S (for a sample) and STDEV.P (for a population) exist, STDEV is the legacy function for this purpose and remains valid for compatibility.

A. MIN: This function returns the smallest numerical value in a specified range of cells, not the standard deviation.
B. AVERAGE: This function calculates the arithmetic mean (average) of the numbers in a specified range, not the standard deviation.
D. MAX: This function returns the largest numerical value in a specified range of cells, not the standard deviation.
