Bidirectional Forwarding Detection (BFD) is a lightweight detection protocol designed to find faults in the path between two forwarding engines. Its primary contribution to high availability is its ability to detect failures very quickly (in milliseconds). When BFD detects a link or node failure, it immediately notifies associated routing protocols (like OSPF or BGP). This rapid notification allows the routing protocol to bypass its own slower, timer-based failure detection mechanisms and begin reconverging on an alternate path almost instantly, significantly reducing traffic loss and network downtime.

B. BFD is a failure detection protocol; it has no role in IP address assignment, which is handled by DHCP or static configuration.

C. Path selection based on metrics is the core function of a routing protocol (e.g., OSPF cost), not BFD, which only reports on path liveness.

D. BFD adds configuration complexity to enable rapid failure detection; it does not inherently decrease administrative overhead in link management.
