A light wave has two independent and orthogonally polarized modes on the plane perpendicular to
the transmission direction, which are generally called X polarization and Y polarization respectively.
Using this property of optical signals, the polarization multiplexing separately modulates optical
signals on the two orthogonal polarizations.
