IBM Cloud® Internet Services Edge functions allow you to create or modify existing applications,

without having to configure or maintain infrastructure, by using a serverless execution environment.

Edge functions run on CIS edge servers, not in the user’s browser. That means you can trust that your

code runs in a trusted environment where it cannot be bypassed by malicious clients. It also means

that the user does not need to be using a modern browser that supports service workers – you can

even intercept requests from API clients that aren't browsers. Edge Functions allows you to run code

closer to users of your public-facing applications or websites. In turn, you can improve your

application's performance and reduce latency. This means you can quickly create new applications or

modify existing ones without having to configure or maintain infrastructure via our serverless

execution environment. Once a new application is deployed or an existing application is modified, it

takes us ~15 seconds to get the changes distributed globally to our 180+ PoPs worldwide.

The Internet of Things, or IoT, refers to the billions of physical devices around the world that are now

connected to the internet, all collecting and sharing data.

Infrastructure-as-a-Service, commonly referred to as simply “IaaS,” is a form of cloud computing that

delivers fundamental compute, network, and storage resources to consumers on-demand, over the

internet, and on a pay-as-you-go basis. IaaS enables end users to scale and shrink resources on an as-

needed basis, reducing the need for high, up-front capital expenditures or unnecessary “owned”

infrastructure, especially in the case of “spiky” workloads. In contrast to PaaS and SaaS (even newer

computing models like containers and serverless), IaaS provides the lowest-level control of resources

in the cloud.

Analytics Engine service develop and deploy analytics applications using open source Apache Spark

VMware vSphere is a streamlined and optimized ordering platform for VMware. With this platform,

you can build your own IBM-hosted VMware environment by customizing and ordering the VMware-

compatible hardware based on your selected VMware components.

Hybrid cloud is simply the combination of public and private cloud environments working together to

run your applications or workloads. Key tenets of all hybrid clouds: interoperability, scalability,

portability, and security.

A VPC is a public cloud offering that lets an enterprise establish its own private cloud-like computing

environment on shared public cloud infrastructure. You can subdivide a VPC with subnets, where

each subnet can reach the public internet through an optional public gateway. You can assign an FIP

to any instance to reach it from the internet, or the other way around. This is independent of

whether the subnet is attached to a public gateway. Subnets within IBM Cloud VPC offer private

connectivity; they can talk to each other over a private link, through the implicit router. Setting up

routes isn't necessary.

IBM Cloud Site Reliability Engineers automate IT operations and improve system availability and

reliability. They can help clients build a modern network operations center.

Subnets are the foundational building blocks used to deploy cloud resources in your public cloud

VPC. They are bound to a single zone and cannot span multiple zones or regions, which helps with

security, reduces latency, and improves availability. Create multiple VPCs and subnets easily by using

the suggested prefix ranges and preconfigured network security policies or design and define your

own address prefixes and custom security policies. CIDR blocks 161.26/16 and 166.8/14 are both

VPC. The default quota limit for the number of subnets that can be created within a VPC is 15.

Cloud native is an architectural style where the application is typically one that is designed to run on

a specific platform. In many cases, these applications can also be moved around to different cloud

platforms — so they are also cloud agnostic.
